Too much news; back to some wise words

The past few posts have been dedicated to the unforeseen switch of several top universities away from early acceptance in favor of a single admission process. For a break, I had some advice to share regarding deciding which colleges to apply to in the fall.

First of all, it begs saying that, like basic economic principles deem, your time, money, and energy and effort to spend on college applications are limited resources. So, you must figure out how best to apply those this fall. Part of the application process is deciding where to apply in the first place.

Don’t be lured by big names alone. Sometimes, name recognition does mean top programs, but for some niche subjects, oftentimes lesser known schools’ academic programs can prevail.

For example, if you wanted to study engineering, in all likelihood any Ivy League would be just fine, but some engineering-specific schools like Olin College of Engineering may be just as good, if not better at the particular program you are looking for.

So, if you are having trouble narrowing down your college list, really spend some time thinking about what you’d like to focus on academically in college. If there’s an obvious answer then don’t just look at colleges with broad academic options; you may end up ruling out great opportunities in lesser-known schools with specific programs that are much higher ranking.
